February 4 - 8, 2008

Monday:
Journal #7 "I have a duty to speak the truth as I see it and share not just my triumphs, not just the things that felt good, but the pain, the intense, often unmitigated pain. It is important to share how I know survival is survival and not just a walk through the rain" - Audre Lorde

Fishbowl with 1st Drafts (cont.)

Wednesday:
Journal #9 "Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you're doomed." - Ray Bradbury

Fishbowl part. 2
Think about the following:
* Did the author include specific examples? Were there enough examples to show the author's growth as a writer & support her claims about writing? Were the examples rich with detail?
* Did the piece begin with a hook? Was it truly compelling? Did it draw you - the reader - in?

Thursday:
Journal #10 "An autobiography is a book a person writes about his own life and it is usually full of all sorts of boring details" - Roald Dahl

Find and Replace Activity
Read through the first draft of your writer's autobiography and highlight all of the nouns. Next, replace each general noun with a specific one.

Friday:
Creed #3 Make a list of 5 to 10 people who have influenced or inspired you. (Include one or two who may have been less-than-positive influences). A few ideas:
The family I've been born into
The friends I've found
Neighbors I've come to know
Teachers I've had
Characters in books I've read
Authors of books that have influenced me
Characters in films, shows, or cartoons who have influenced me
Community members I've talked with
Public figures - actors, sports figures, singers, dancers, etc. - that have inspired or influenced me

From that list, choose the 3-5 people who have inspired you the most and write a reflective paragraph for each. Be sure to explain how that individual influenced or inspired you.

Sensory Details activity
Practice using sensory imagery by describing your breakfast.

1) For each of the five senses (touch, smell, sight, taste and sound), write at least three phrases that create an image of your breakfast for the reader.

2) Write a simile to describe the look of your breakfast

3) Write a metphor to describe its smell

4) Personify your morning meal by explaining how it would move (if it could)

5) Create an onomatopoetic word that captures the sound your breakfast made

6) Finally, write a hyperbole to describe its taste

** Reminder: 2nd Draft of Writer's Autobiography is due Monday **

I'm glad you enjoyed them. "Story of my Life" was a hit, though I got a strange look from the principal when he heard loud rock music pouring out of our room. Hopefully we'll see you back in class soon; we really miss your comments and constructive criticism.
