Debate: Who was Chris McCandless?
The class was split into 5 groups, each representing a person or group mentioned in the book.
1) Native Alaskans (ch.1 & ch. 8 p.70-72)
2) Wayne Westerberg & his crew (ch. 3 p. 15-19; p. 61-64; p. 67-69)
3) Jan Burres, Bob, and the tramps from the slabs (ch. 4 p.30; ch. 6 p. 43-46)
4) Ronald Franz (ch. 6 p.46-60)
5) Chris' Family (ch. 11-13)
Using clues from the text, each student wrote a paragraph (from the point of view of their assigned character or characters) that explained their feelings about Chris, his adventures, and his death. Next, students - still in character - engaged in a debate about Chris.
